JULIEN CARLIER

Chorégraphe / Directeur artistique

Julien est né à Bruxelles en 1985. Il a débuté la danse par la pratique intensive du Breakdance. Parallèlement, il se forme à la kinésithérapie à l’Université Libre de Bruxelles, et obtient un Master en 2009. 

Sa démarche combine la virtuosité de son background dedanseur.se.s Hip-Hop à une recherche autour de l'intime et de la sensibilité. Son travail se nourrit des rencontres, de ses différentes pratiques et des expériences de vie. À travers des formes chorégraphiques hybrides, il explore la manière dont des expériences vécues peuvent se transformer en objets chorégraphiques. C’est le passage du monde réel vers l’espace scénique qui l’intéresse, plaçant le corps comme médium de cette transformation.

Parmi les thèmes des créations, on retrouve : la rencontre entre la danse et d’autres pratiques artistiques ; le rapport à la contrainte, l’effort et à l’engagement physique ; la notion de perspective, de composition d’images et de Zoom ; une recherche autour des limites, etc.

Julien  Carlier réalise son travail chorégraphique depuis plus de 10 ans  : MON/DE (2015), DÉJÀ VU (2016), GOLEM (2019), DRESS CODE (2021), COLLAPSE (2021), TRAJECTOIRES (2022), PAYSAGE (2024).

Il fait partie des 20 artistes sélectionnés par la prestigieuse plateforme AEROWAVES pour 2020.

Il étaitchorégraphe résident à Charleroi Danse pour les saisons 20-21, 21-22, 22-23. Il est artiste associé au Théâtre de Liège entre 2024 et 2028.  Il a participé à deux reprises aux programmes de la fondation Royaumont à Paris : Prototype IV en 2016-17, et OPUS en août 2021.

Il est enseignant titulaire au sein du MASTER Danses et pratiques chorégraphiques à l’INSAS.

COMPAGNIE ABIS

Créée et dirigée par Julien Carlier, Abis affirme une démarche expérimentale mélangeant sans cesse les disciplines et revendiquant un aspect hybride à mi-chemin entre plusieurs esthétiques, mais toujours connectée, de près ou de plus loin, à un ADN Hip-Hop, par la technicité des danseurs, de l’écriture musical, et le rapport à la rythmicité

Les activités sont centrées sur la création de formes chorégraphiques et se sont organisées autour de 3 axes : des projets de créations à proprement parler ; des résidences LABOS servant à perfectionner ou faire émerger des idées, à rencontrer des artistes ; la rencontre avec les publics autour de pratiques (atelier), de discussions et d’immersion dans le travail de la compagnie (médiation).

Julien was born in Brussels in 1985. He began dance through the intensive practice of Breakdance. At the same time, he trained in physiotherapy at the Université Libre de Bruxelles and obtained a Master’s degree in 2009.

His approach combines the virtuosity of his Hip-Hop dancer background with a research focused on intimacy and sensitivity. His work is nourished by encounters, his various practices, and life experiences. Through hybrid choreographic forms, he explores how lived experiences can be transformed into choreographic objects. It is the passage from the real world to the stage space that interests him, placing the body as the medium of this transformation.

Among the themes of his creations are: the encounter between dance and other artistic practices; the relationship to constraint, effort, and physical commitment; the notion of perspective, image composition and Zoom; a research around limits, etc.

Julien Carlier has been developing his choreographic work for more than ten years: MON/DE (2015), DÉJÀ VU (2016), GOLEM (2019), DRESS CODE (2021), COLLAPSE (2021), TRAJECTOIRES (2022), PAYSAGE (2024).

He was one of the 20 artists selected by the prestigious AEROWAVES platform in 2020.

He was resident choreographer at Charleroi Danse for the 20–21, 21–22 and 22–23 seasons. He is associate artist at Théâtre de Liège between 2024 and 2028. He participated twice in the programs of the Royaumont Foundation in Paris: Prototype IV in 2016–17, and OPUS in August 2021.

He is a permanent lecturer within the Master’s program in Dance and Choreographic Practices at INSAS.

COMPAGNIE ABIS

Created and directed by Julien Carlier, Abis asserts an experimental approach constantly blending disciplines and claiming a hybrid aspect halfway between several aesthetics, yet always connected, directly or indirectly, to a Hip-Hop DNA through the dancers’ technicality, the musical writing, and the relationship to rhythm.

The activities are centered on the creation of choreographic forms and are organized around three axes: creation projects in the strict sense; LAB residencies aimed at refining or bringing out ideas and meeting artists; engagement with audiences through practices (workshops), discussions, and immersion in the company’s work (mediation).
